Do you REALLY need a Clean Room For HARD drive DATA recovery?

If you've searched for hard drive data recovery, you've probably found companies promoting multimillion dollar "clean rooms" with employees wearing hazmat-style suits. This is a misleading marketing gimmick. I'll explain why a $5 million clean room isn't a requirement for safe and successful data recovery, and scientifically validate the cleanliness of our environment using professional-grade tools.

The Myth:You Need a 2 Million Dollar Clean Room for Data Recovery

Well known data recovery companies advertise their use of "ISO-certified clean rooms", wearing body suits with goggles. This would make sense if your hard drive were covered in ebola or smallpox: but it's not. They're implying that this makes them a better data recovery center, or that this silliness is necessary, as PITS does below.

This isn't true; these clean rooms are marketing nonsense used to justify prices that are 5-10x those of reputable data recovery labs that don't screw people.

Opening a hard drive in your living room is a bad idea; but it's disingenuous to imply that 2 million dollar cleanrooms make one lab more suited than another proper job. What matters is:

The Purair VLF-48 is a professional-grade laminar flow hood made to protect hard drives from airborne particulates when we open them. It uses Ultra Low Penetration Air filters rated at 99.999% efficiency for particles between 0.1 to 0.3 microns. It creates vertical curtain of filtered air which constantly flushes contaminants away from our work area.

How does the Purair VLF-48 work?

To verify the effectiveness of our setup, I bought a $5000 TSI P-Trak 8525; this is a professional ultrafine particle counter that can detect particles as small as 0.02 microns. For reference, that's smaller than the particles many "clean rooms" even measure. and yes, I realize the irony of spending $1500 more on the test tool than I did on the bench...

After less than 1 minute in this bench, the particle counter counted zero particles down to 0.02 microns in size!

How small is that? What's a micron?

A micron is as small as my confidence & self image after Tiffany rejected my invite to 8th grade prom.

The individual dust specs you see moving around your room are 10-50 microns in size. A visible dust particle is about 500 times larger in diameter. Since volume increases with the cube of the radius, an individual dust particle is approximately 100 million times larger than a 0.02 micron particle - and this bench has ZERO of them!

When placed inside the Purair VLF-48 and powered on, the particle count dropped to 0 particles down to 0.02 microns in under 60 seconds.
