No. Modern hard drive PCBs contain a ROM chip (typically the U12) storing adaptive parameters unique to the internal head assembly. Swapping a PCB without transferring that ROM chip with a hot-air rework station produces a drive that spins but clicks. If the original ROM is lost or damaged during a DIY attempt, the data becomes permanently inaccessible. We handle ROM transfers and head matching as part of our hard drive data recovery process.

Helium drives like the Western Digital Ultrastar He10 and He12 are opened unpowered on the clean bench and never spun afterward in air: once the helium is gone the atmospheric density changes and the read heads no longer fly at the height they were tuned for, so the chassis is resealed and refilled with helium before the platters turn again. Helium-sealed mechanical cases use helium HDD pricing from $200–$5,000+. Helium cost: $400-$800 additional for head swap and surface damage tiers. This covers the helium refill required after opening the sealed chamber.
