No. Your drive's board carries adaptive parameters matched to the head assembly inside that one drive. On older Western Digital boards those adaptives sit in a separate ROM chip. On later Western Digital and Toshiba boards they live inside the controller itself. Swap a board without moving those adaptives over and the drive spins without ever reading. It might click, or it might just never come ready. If the original ROM is lost or damaged in a DIY attempt, we have to rebuild the adaptives from the drive's own service area, and only some families let us do that. We handle ROM transfers and head matching as part of our hard drive data recovery process.

Yes. We open helium drives like the Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC510 and DC HC520, sold earlier as the He10 and He12, on the clean bench with the power off, and we never spin one in air afterward. Air is roughly seven times denser than helium. Once the helium is gone, the read heads no longer fly at the height they were tuned for. The factory seal is laser welded, and no lab can put that weld back. We refill the case with helium and close it well enough to hold that atmosphere while we image the drive. It isn't a permanent seal. Helium-sealed mechanical cases use helium HDD pricing from $200–$5,000+. Helium cost: $400-$800 additional for head swap and surface damage tiers. This covers the helium refill required after opening the sealed chamber.
