How is HDD data recovery different from SSD recovery?

A hard drive stores data on spinning magnetic platters read by mechanical heads, so HDD recovery means head swaps and platter cleaning on a clean bench, plus firmware Service Area repair. An SSD has no heads or platters. It stores data in NAND flash chips managed by a controller, so SSD recovery is chip-level and controller work.

What should I do with a dead or clicking hard drive?

Unplug it and stop trying to power it on. The sound won't tell you which part failed, and every spin-up before the drive reaches a bench is another chance to score the surface. Don't run recovery software, don't freeze the drive, and don't open it. Send it to us and we'll diagnose it for free. If donor heads turn out to be the repair, we swap them in a 0.02 micron ULPA-filtered clean bench.

How much does HDD data recovery cost?

Standard hard drive recovery runs $100–$2,000 depending on the failure. A simple copy off a working drive starts at $100, and file system recovery starts from $250. Firmware repair is $600–$900, and a clean-bench head swap is $1,200–$1,500 plus a donor drive. There are no diagnostic fees, and if we can't recover your data, there's no recovery fee.

How long does hard drive recovery take?

File system recovery takes 2-4 weeks and firmware repair takes 3-6 weeks. Head swaps take 4-8 weeks and platter work 4-8 weeks, because we have to source and match a donor drive by model, firmware revision, and head map. If you need to jump the queue, there's a $100 rush fee.

Sealed helium drives are on their own price list, $200–$5,000+. When a head swap or platter repair opens one, we refill it with helium. That adds $400–$800, and the donor has to be an exact match. Helium drive prices
