After 13 years of business in New York, we relocated to Austin, Texas.

I lived in New York for 32 years and operated a repair business there for over a decade. The city and state made it untenable. Here is what happened:

1. The city tried to revoke my business license for nonpayment of a bill I had paid in full 10 months earlier.
2. In 2016, the state placed a lien and warrant on my business for a 2012 tax bill I had already paid in full. All correspondence was sent to an unassociated PO Box in Berwick, Maine, so I would never see it.
3. They claimed I owed over half a million dollars in unpaid taxes. After review, my actual error rate was one tenth of one percent.
4. I was fined for noncompliance with a regulation the agency itself could not explain how to comply with.
5. Paying that fine took four hours on the phone because their payment system did not work, and the court officer had never processed one before.
