Silicon Motion SM2269XT Data RecoveryADATA Legend 850 / Kingston NV2 (some revisions) / Lexar NM760

The Silicon Motion SM2269XT is a cost-reduced Gen4 NVMe controller using HMB instead of onboard DRAM. Found in many mid-range Gen4 SSDs as a successor to the SM2267XT. Shares the Silicon Motion PC-3000 module family with older SM22xx controllers. We recover Silicon Motion SM2269XT-based SSDs using our PC-3000 system's Silicon Motion-specific firmware tools at our Austin lab.

Drives Using the Silicon Motion SM2269XT

The following consumer SSDs use the Silicon Motion SM2269XT. If your drive is on this list, the failure modes and recovery approaches described on this page apply to your situation.

Silicon Motion SM2269XT Drive Models

4 models affected

Failure Modes

Each failure mode has a different root cause and requires a different recovery approach. Identifying the correct failure mode is the first step in any recovery.

FTL metadata corruption

HMB-dependent FTL is vulnerable to power loss. QLC variants are more susceptible due to higher write amplification. A single unclean shutdown can corrupt the flash translation layer, causing the drive to report wrong capacity or disappear from the BIOS entirely.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Drive shows 0MB or wrong capacity
  • Not detected in BIOS
  • RAW partition after power loss

Controller hang during TRIM

Concurrent TRIM operations under heavy workload can cause the controller to lock up. The drive stops responding and requires a full power cycle. In some cases, the FTL state is inconsistent after the hang, preventing normal operation on the next boot.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Drive stops responding during defrag or TRIM
  • Requires power cycle to recover
  • Drive not bootable after TRIM hang

How We Recover Silicon Motion SM2269XT SSDs

Firmware-Level Recovery

We recover Silicon Motion SM2269XT-based SSDs using the PC-3000 SSD system with the Silicon Motion Active Utility. This provides direct access to the controller's diagnostic interface for firmware repair and FTL (Flash Translation Layer) reconstruction.

Firmware-level access preserves the NAND chip layout and avoids the complications of chip-off recovery. For most Silicon Motion SM2269XT failures, this is the primary recovery path.

Chip-Off Recovery

Chip-off is not viable for the Silicon Motion SM2269XT due to hardware encryption or architectural limitations. Recovery depends on accessing the controller through firmware-level tools or manufacturer diagnostic modes.

AES-256 hardware encryption makes chip-off not viable. Shares the Silicon Motion PC-3000 module family with older SM22xx controllers. DRAM-less HMB design.

Pricing

SSD recovery for Silicon Motion SM2269XT drives follows our published pricing: $200 for simple copies up to $1,200–$1,500 for complex component repair or advanced board rebuilds. File system recovery starts at $250. PCB repair is $600–$900. Firmware corruption is $900–$1,200. Free evaluation, firm quote before work begins.

See our full pricing breakdown for details. Our No Data, No Fee guarantee means you pay nothing if we cannot recover your files.

Data Recovery Standards & Verification

Our Austin lab operates on a transparency-first model. We use industry-standard recovery tools, including PC-3000 and DeepSpar, combined with strict environmental controls to make sure your hard drive is handled safely and properly. This approach allows us to serve clients nationwide with consistent technical standards.

Open-drive work is performed in a ULPA-filtered laminar-flow bench, validated to 0.02 µm particle count, verified using TSI P-Trak instrumentation.

Transparent History

Serving clients nationwide via mail-in service since 2008. Our lead engineer holds PC-3000 and HEX Akademia certifications for hard drive firmware repair and mechanical recovery.

Media Coverage

Our repair work has been covered by The Wall Street Journal and Business Insider, with CBC News reporting on our pricing transparency. Louis Rossmann has testified in Right to Repair hearings in multiple states and founded the Repair Preservation Group.

Aligned Incentives

Our "No Data, No Charge" policy means we assume the risk of the recovery attempt, not the client.

Louis Rossmann's well trained staff review our lab protocols to ensure technical accuracy and honest service. Since 2008, his focus has been on clear technical communication and accurate diagnostics rather than sales-driven explanations.

We believe in proving standards rather than just stating them. We use TSI P-Trak instrumentation to verify that clean-air benchmarks are met before any drive is opened.
