Failure Modes

Each failure mode has a different root cause and requires a different recovery approach. Identifying the correct failure mode is the first step in any recovery.

SLC caching performance collapse

Over-aggressive SLC caching causes performance collapse when cache is full. Can lead to firmware instability.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Severe performance drops during writes
  • Drive becomes unresponsive during large transfers
  • Firmware instability after sustained writes

Firmware corruption from improper shutdown

Improper shutdown corrupts controller firmware. Power loss during SLC cache flush is particularly damaging.

Symptoms you may notice

  • NVMe SSD not detected
  • Drive not seen in BIOS after crash
  • RAW partition after power loss

How We Recover Silicon Motion SM2262EN SSDs

Firmware-Level Recovery

We recover Silicon Motion SM2262EN-based SSDs using the PC-3000 SSD system with the Silicon Motion Active Utility. This provides direct access to the controller's diagnostic interface for firmware repair and FTL (Flash Translation Layer) reconstruction.

Firmware-level access preserves the NAND chip layout and avoids the complications of chip-off recovery. For most Silicon Motion SM2262EN failures, this is the primary recovery path.

Chip-Off Recovery

Chip-off is possible but complicated for Silicon Motion SM2262EN drives. Hardware encryption or proprietary NAND encoding reduces chip-off success rates compared to firmware-level recovery.

We attempt firmware-level recovery first and only proceed to chip-off when no other option exists.

Dual Cortex-R5 cores. SM2262 (non-EN) also covered by same PC-3000 utility. ADATA controversially swapped SM2262EN for slower SM2262G in later SX8200 Pro production.

Pricing

SSD firmware and logical recovery for the Silicon Motion SM2262EN typically costs $300 to $500. Controller-level failures requiring advanced diagnostics are $500 to $1,500. Chip-off recovery, when viable, is $1,500 to $2,500.

See our full pricing breakdown for details. Our No Data, No Fee guarantee means you pay nothing if we cannot recover your files.

Hard Drive Data Recovery Standards & Verification

Our Austin lab operates on a transparency-first model. We use industry-standard recovery tools, including PC-3000 and DeepSpar, combined with strict environmental controls to make sure your hard drive is handled safely and properly. This approach allows us to serve clients nationwide with consistent technical standards.

Open-drive work is performed in a laminar-flow bench filtered to 0.02 µm, verified using TSI P-Trak instrumentation.

Transparent History

Serving clients nationwide via mail-in service since 2008.

Media Coverage

Our repair work has been covered by The Wall Street Journal and Business Insider, with CBC News reporting on our pricing transparency. Louis Rossmann has testified in Right to Repair hearings in multiple states and founded the Repair Preservation Group.

Aligned Incentives

Our "No Data, No Charge" policy means we assume the risk of the recovery attempt, not the client.

Louis Rossmann's well trained staff review our lab protocols to ensure technical accuracy and honest service. Since 2008, his focus has been on clear technical communication and accurate diagnostics rather than sales-driven explanations.

We believe in proving standards rather than just stating them. We use TSI P-Trak instrumentation to verify that clean-air benchmarks are met before any drive is opened.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SLC cache collapse on the SM2262EN?
The SM2262EN uses aggressive SLC caching, writing incoming data to NAND cells in faster single-level cell mode before migrating it to TLC. When the cache fills up during sustained writes, performance drops sharply as the controller scrambles to flush data. If a power loss occurs during this cache flush, the firmware can become unstable, leaving the drive undetectable in BIOS.
Did ADATA really swap the controller in the SX8200 Pro?
Yes. ADATA initially shipped the SX8200 Pro with the SM2262EN, then silently switched later production runs to the slower SM2262G without changing the product name. This matters for recovery because the two controllers have different firmware structures. We identify the actual controller on your specific drive before beginning any recovery work to make sure we use the correct PC-3000 procedures.
Can power loss permanently damage an SM2262EN drive?
Power loss during an SLC cache flush is the highest-risk scenario. The SM2262EN has dual Cortex-R5 cores managing writes across 8 channels simultaneously. A sudden shutdown during this process can corrupt the flash translation layer and leave the firmware in an inconsistent state. We see this frequently on ADATA SX8200 Pro and HP EX950 drives after power outages or system crashes.
My HP EX950 shows RAW partition after a crash. Is the data gone?
A RAW partition on an SM2262EN drive usually means the flash translation layer or file system metadata was corrupted during the crash, but the actual file data on the NAND chips is intact. We use PC-3000 to rebuild the FTL mapping and restore access to the partition. Most RAW partition cases on the EX950 are recoverable.
How much does SM2262EN data recovery cost?
SM2262EN NVMe recovery costs $300-$1,200. Firmware repair and FTL rebuilds for drives that still respond to PC-3000 diagnostics run $300-$600. Cases with severe corruption requiring extended NAND imaging are $600-$1,200. If we cannot recover your data, there is no charge.

Not an SSD issue? We also recover hard drives, RAID arrays, and iPhones.
