SSD Data Recovery

Samsung Pascal Controller Data RecoverySamsung 990 PRO

Samsung's Pascal controller powers the 990 PRO. Early news focused on a cosmetic SMART degradation bug, but actual data recovery scenarios involve drives that fail to initialize, drop offline randomly, or cause BSODs due to firmware panics. PC-3000 support is currently under development, meaning recovery heavily relies on board-level diagnostics. Our Austin lab uses board-level diagnostics and NAND-level techniques for Samsung Pascal Controller recovery.

Drives Using the Samsung Pascal Controller

The following consumer SSDs use the Samsung Pascal Controller. If your drive is on this list, the failure modes and recovery approaches described on this page apply to your situation.

Failure Modes

Each failure mode has a different root cause and requires a different recovery approach. Identifying the correct failure mode is the first step in any recovery.

Firmware panic / BSOD

Firmware panics leading to the drive dropping offline, causing BSODs, or failing to initialize. Because PC-3000 Active Utility support is not yet mature for Pascal, recovery primarily relies on repairing underlying power delivery to stabilize the drive.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Drive not recognized
  • BSOD with 990 PRO
  • Incorrect temperature readings
  • Drive disappears randomly

How We Recover Samsung Pascal Controller SSDs

Firmware-Level Recovery

The PC-3000 does not yet have full Active Utility support for the Samsung Pascal Controller. Recovery relies on manufacturer-specific diagnostic modes, service pin access, and NAND-level techniques.

We monitor PC-3000 firmware updates for new controller support. When utility support becomes available, firmware-level recovery will be the preferred path for this controller.

Chip-Off Recovery

Chip-off is not viable for the Samsung Pascal Controller due to hardware encryption or architectural limitations. Recovery depends on accessing the controller through firmware-level tools or manufacturer diagnostic modes.

Pricing

SSD recovery for Samsung Pascal Controller drives follows our published pricing: $200 for simple copies up to $1,200–$1,500 for complex component repair or advanced board rebuilds. File system recovery starts at $250. PCB repair is $600–$900. Firmware corruption is $900–$1,200. Free evaluation, firm quote before work begins.

See our full pricing breakdown for details. Our No Data, No Fee guarantee means you pay nothing if we cannot recover your files.

Data Recovery Standards & Verification

Our Austin lab operates on a transparency-first model. We use industry-standard recovery tools, including PC-3000 and DeepSpar, combined with strict environmental controls to make sure your hard drive is handled safely and properly. This approach allows us to serve clients nationwide with consistent technical standards.

Open-drive work is performed in a ULPA-filtered laminar-flow bench, validated to 0.02 µm particle count, verified using TSI P-Trak instrumentation.

Transparent History

Serving clients nationwide via mail-in service since 2008. Our lead engineer holds PC-3000 and HEX Akademia certifications for hard drive firmware repair and mechanical recovery.

Media Coverage

Our repair work has been covered by The Wall Street Journal and Business Insider, with CBC News reporting on our pricing transparency. Louis Rossmann has testified in Right to Repair hearings in multiple states and founded the Repair Preservation Group.

Aligned Incentives

Our "No Data, No Charge" policy means we assume the risk of the recovery attempt, not the client.

Louis Rossmann's well trained staff review our lab protocols to ensure technical accuracy and honest service. Since 2008, his focus has been on clear technical communication and accurate diagnostics rather than sales-driven explanations.

We believe in proving standards rather than just stating them. We use TSI P-Trak instrumentation to verify that clean-air benchmarks are met before any drive is opened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Samsung 990 PRO losing health so fast?
Samsung's Pascal controller in early 990 PRO units shipped with firmware version 0B2QJXD7, which had a bug causing the SMART 'Percentage Used' value to increase far faster than actual NAND wear. Some drives lost 20% or more of reported health in just a few weeks of normal use. Samsung released firmware 1B2QJXD7 to stop the degradation, but it does not reset the already-inflated wear counter.
Should I update my 990 PRO firmware to fix the health degradation?
Update only after you have a complete backup. The firmware update from 0B2QJXD7 to 1B2QJXD7 stops the health counter from dropping further, but there is a risk that the update process itself could fail and leave the drive undetectable. We have seen 990 PRO drives that were bricked by the update. If your drive is still functional, back up everything first, then apply the update through Samsung Magician.
My Samsung 990 PRO is causing BSOD errors. Is this the firmware bug?
It may be related. Samsung released multiple firmware patches for the 990 PRO through September 2025 addressing BSOD, non-recognition, and temperature logging bugs in addition to the health degradation issue. If you are experiencing BSODs with a 990 PRO, check which firmware version is installed. If the drive has become completely non-functional and is causing BSODs even when not the boot drive, the controller may need professional repair.
Does PC-3000 support the Samsung Pascal controller?
PC-3000 is developing support for the Pascal controller but does not yet have a full Active Utility for it. We use a combination of Samsung-specific diagnostic commands and NAND-level techniques for 990 PRO recovery. Samsung's proprietary NAND encoding makes chip-off difficult, so controller-level access is the priority. Recovery options for this controller are more limited than for the older Elpis or Phoenix controllers.
How much does Samsung 990 PRO data recovery cost?
Recovery for 990 PRO and 990 EVO drives costs $200-$1,500. Drives that are still partially functional and can be imaged directly are $200-$700. Cases requiring controller-level repair or NAND extraction without full PC-3000 utility support are $700-$1,500. No charge if recovery is not successful.

Not an SSD issue? We also recover hard drives, RAID arrays, and iPhones.
