Failure Modes

Each failure mode has a different root cause and requires a different recovery approach. Identifying the correct failure mode is the first step in any recovery.

Permanent data loss bug

Reproducible permanent data loss bug discovered by PCPartPicker. Data written without errors becomes permanently unreadable on 1TB 2230 models on PCIe 4.0 capable platforms (the bug does not reproduce at PCIe 3.0 speeds). Phison acknowledged.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Data silently corrupted
  • Files unreadable after writing
  • Drive appears healthy but data is gone

How We Recover Phison PS5021-E21T SSDs

Firmware-Level Recovery

The PC-3000 does not yet have full Active Utility support for the Phison PS5021-E21T. Recovery relies on manufacturer-specific diagnostic modes, service pin access, and NAND-level techniques.

We monitor PC-3000 firmware updates for new controller support. When utility support becomes available, firmware-level recovery will be the preferred path for this controller.

Chip-Off Recovery

Chip-off is possible but complicated for Phison PS5021-E21T drives. Hardware encryption or proprietary NAND encoding reduces chip-off success rates compared to firmware-level recovery.

We attempt firmware-level recovery first and only proceed to chip-off when no other option exists.

Pricing

SSD firmware and logical recovery for the Phison PS5021-E21T typically costs $300 to $500. Controller-level failures requiring advanced diagnostics are $500 to $1,500. Chip-off recovery, when viable, is $1,500 to $2,500.

See our full pricing breakdown for details. Our No Data, No Fee guarantee means you pay nothing if we cannot recover your files.

Hard Drive Data Recovery Standards & Verification

Our Austin lab operates on a transparency-first model. We use industry-standard recovery tools, including PC-3000 and DeepSpar, combined with strict environmental controls to make sure your hard drive is handled safely and properly. This approach allows us to serve clients nationwide with consistent technical standards.

Open-drive work is performed in a laminar-flow bench filtered to 0.02 µm, verified using TSI P-Trak instrumentation.

Transparent History

Serving clients nationwide via mail-in service since 2008.

Media Coverage

Our repair work has been covered by The Wall Street Journal and Business Insider, with CBC News reporting on our pricing transparency. Louis Rossmann has testified in Right to Repair hearings in multiple states and founded the Repair Preservation Group.

Aligned Incentives

Our "No Data, No Charge" policy means we assume the risk of the recovery attempt, not the client.

Louis Rossmann's well trained staff review our lab protocols to ensure technical accuracy and honest service. Since 2008, his focus has been on clear technical communication and accurate diagnostics rather than sales-driven explanations.

We believe in proving standards rather than just stating them. We use TSI P-Trak instrumentation to verify that clean-air benchmarks are met before any drive is opened.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PCPartPicker data loss bug on Phison E21T drives?
PCPartPicker discovered a reproducible bug in 2024 where data written to 1TB E21T-based 2230 SSDs on X570, X670E, and Z790 platforms would silently become permanently unreadable. The drive reports no errors during the write, and SMART shows the drive as healthy, but the data is gone. Phison acknowledged the bug. We have recovered data from affected Crucial P3, Kingston NV2, and Sabrent Rocket 2230 drives.
Can you recover data from a Steam Deck SSD?
Yes. The Steam Deck uses M.2 2230 SSDs, and most aftermarket upgrades use E21T-based drives like the Sabrent Rocket 2230. We remove the 2230 drive from the Steam Deck and connect it to our PC-3000 system for diagnosis. Common failures include firmware corruption causing 0MB detection, RAW partitions, and the silent data loss bug on 1TB models.
Why is the M.2 2230 form factor harder to recover?
The 2230 form factor packs the controller and NAND into a much smaller PCB than standard 2280 drives. The E21T is DRAM-less and uses Host Memory Buffer (HMB), which means mapping tables are stored in the host system's RAM and can be lost during a crash. PC-3000 support for the E21T is still under development, so some cases require lower-level NAND access techniques.
My E21T SSD shows 0MB capacity. What does that mean?
A 0MB detection means the controller firmware has become corrupted and cannot read the flash translation layer. The NAND chips still hold your data, but the controller has lost the map that tells it where files are stored. We rebuild the firmware tables to restore access. This is common after power loss or system crashes on DRAM-less drives like the E21T.
How much does Phison E21T 2230 SSD recovery cost?
Recovery costs $300-$1,500. Standard firmware repair cases run $300-$700. The data loss bug cases and drives requiring NAND-level extraction where PC-3000 support is limited can reach $1,000-$1,500. We do not charge if the data is not recoverable.

Not an SSD issue? We also recover hard drives, RAID arrays, and iPhones.
